What’s your favourite thing about Christmas? If you ask Red White & Amber Liquor Merchants (and many other Glenferrie locals!) they will undoubtedly tell you it’s the multitude of fantastically festive champagnes and sparkling wines on offer. And who could argue with that? After all, nothing quite says Christmas like the celebratory pop of some delicious fizz.
Graedon White, owner of Red White & Amber Liquor Merchants at 718 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn, gave us his top picks on the best champagne for the best prices this Christmas.
First up, we have the moreish Heidsieck Monopole Brut NV. The Brut NV is Heidsieck & Co. Monopole’s most famous and widely distributed variety, and with good reason. With a full, fruity blend of 70% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Meunier and a well-balanced combination of lemon, blackcurrant and a ripe acidity to finish, this non-vintage makes the ideal apéritif – especially if you’re drinking on a budget. At just $49.99 or 2 for $90 at Red White & Amber Liquor Merchants, the value for great tasting champagne doesn’t get much better than that.
Next up is the iconic Collet Brut NV. Collet is perhaps most famous for the fact that it sources from some of the finest growers and vineyards in the Champagne region, and their Brut NV variety is no exception. The blend of 50% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir is sourced from villages such as Festigny, Bonneil, Reuil, Crus of Chatillon sur Marne and the Ardre Valley, giving a wonderfully diverse flavour. The golden neck of the bottle beautifully matches the bright golden fizz within, boasting rich notes of exotic fruits, citrus and dried flowers in a fine, gentle stream of bubbles. At an excellent price of $59.99, this is another great apéritif Champagne that will go perfectly with starters and amuse-bouches such as puff pastry canapés.
Claiming the third spot on our list is the award-winning Laurent Perrier La Cuvee Brut NV. That’s right, award-winning! This tasteful non-vintage took home the silver award at the International Wine Challenge 2018 and the bronze award of Decanter 2018. So, what is its secret? A unique predominance of 55% Chardonnay blended with smaller amounts of 35% Pinot Noir and 10% Meunier which is then aged for a minimum of four years, leaving a clear, bright fizz with very fine bubbles and undertones of citrus fruits, white flowers and white peach. This classy blend makes a great pick for fish dishes, seafood, white meat, poultry, or simply as an aperitif, and at $69.99 a bottle, it’ll be worth every cent.
And last, but certainly not least, we have the luxurious Louis Roederer Brut Premier. Premier by name, premier by nature, the Brut Premier is blended from six different vintages from over 40 individual plots and is the house’s most complex wine yet, with its classic proportions of 40% Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and 20% Pinot Meunier transforming on the taste buds into fruity hints of hawthorn (so it’ll be right at home here!), almonds and toast. Light enough to be an apéritif and powerful enough to be a food wine, Louis Roederer’s crowning glory really has it all. Pick up a bottle for yourself at Red White & Amber Liquor Merchants for just $74.99.
